Reaching the Tipping Point: eBooks and metadata
Ralph Coviello reviews the exponential growth of the ebook and its metadata as of 2010.
12/10/10

2010 was the year publishers decided that ebooks were here to stay and it was time to get on board, ready or not. The reason is that in the three years since the Kindle was introduced in November 2007, ebook sales and revenue had grown at an astounding rate. In the third quarter of 2007, just prior to the introduction of the Kindle, wholesale ebook sales stood at $8M. As of October 2010, the YTD figures had soared to $340.1M, or almost 9% of trade book sales. This represents a growth rate of nearly 1500% according to the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF). As we all know rapid growth frequently involves growing pains and one of the most significant issues facing this new medium is how to identify an ebook during its life-cycle across the supply chain from publisher to retail platforms to library platforms to readers. Many factors impacting the ebook come from outside of publishing, which is where the ebook has its roots. Some see the solution to identification as the ISBN and metadata standards established by the publishing industry, but others disagree. Because of the ebook's amazing growth it is an issue that can no longer be ignored and Bowker's Publisher Relations department discusses it with stakeholders on a continuing basis. See more.
