Industry News

Full digital content

Bowker has been working on a project to index the full content of a book in order to benefit book buyers and readers. Up to now, we have been indexing content, such as book summaries, sample chapters, tables of contents, author biographies and keywords.

The full digital content extract program enables the complete content of a work to be indexed. Key phrases will be identified and facets such as time, place, and setting will be tagged. All of this work will allow our users of Bowker® Syndetic Solutions and Bowker® Books In Print, librarians, retailers, and school systems to find titles with higher precision.

This project supports all English speaking languages. In the US, we are contacting all market segments. In the UK and Canada we are focusing on trade and higher education publishers.

For each title, Bowker's indexing will:

  • Identify keywords and phrases
  • Assign relevancy and frequency scores to each keyword
  • Tags keywords by facet, such as person, place, or thing
  • Classify general subject, audience, and reading levels
