Welcome to the first issue of the Bowker News! This quarterly publication is meant to bring together information, tips, stories and updates from all Bowker products, which serve libraries, retailers, publishers and individuals.
First, let's start off by giving you a brief overview about Bowker. Most people think of the company as the U.S. agency for ISBNs,
or the home of Books In Print®. Both are correct; however, there is so much more to Bowker!

Industry News
Can you guess the top-selling non-fiction genre with U.S. book buyers? If you said Biography, auto- and otherwise, you're right!
PubTrack Consumer, a service of Bowker, is the publishing industry's premier resource for understanding consumer book buying behavior.
ISBN Agency
As the official ISBN Agency for the United States, Bowker is exclusively responsible for the assignment of the ISBN prefix to publishers with a residence or office in the United States.
ISBN is the standard for the industry and has been for almost 40 years. It's what indentifies your title from all others. A unique ISBN for all products is essential, especially in a world where multiple formats can easily cause confusion for both the buyer and the seller. The "same" e-book, might have several different and/or incompatible formats. The ISBN is key to library and bookstore databases as well as online retailers around the world.
As part of its duty to the International ISBN Agency, Bowker provides information and advice on the uses of the ISBN system to publishers and the book trade, and promotes the use of the Bookland EAN bar code format. Without a unique ISBN, it's impossible to provide vital supply chain information such as: purchase tracking, sales results, inventory, and sales trends.
Books In Print
Books In Print is the largest, unbiased, web-based bibliographic resource in the United States.
Books In Print offers information on over 7.5 million titles (in print, out of print or forthcoming), including books, e-books, audio, and video titles.
Books In Print serves as an indispensable bibliographic resource not only for libraries and collection development, purchasing, content management, but it is also a great research tool for retailers and publishers.
