Bowker is Helping Publishers Discover New Opportunities for Promoting Their Books
In the Publisher Relations department at Bowker we reach out to publishers to collect their enhanced metadata. In many ways this can be an educational process in teaching them about opportunities and methods for promoting their books. Part of the process is explaining to them why submitting their enhanced content to Bowker is to their benefit. They have the sales opportunities afforded by being in Bowker’s Books in Print database which is used by libraries and retailers to make purchasing decisions. We also inform them about Bowker’s library catalog enrichment service Syndetics Solutions which makes great use of the publisher’s enhanced metadata. Another can be to explain the benefits and features of using ONIX an XML computer language standard used by the publishing industry for disseminating book information. The beauty of ONIX is that it was designed to have the flexibility to adapt and grow with the advances in the publishing industry in both the multitude of formats and the variety of promotional tools.
Bowker has a long history of collecting book metadata and has long featured many descriptive text elements extracted from publisher’s ONIX feeds. These include the main description of the book, table of contents, reviews, quotes, a biographical note on the author. However, many publishers may be unaware that ONIX offers them the opportunity to provide and that we can accept features such as a First Chapter, an Introduction, an Extended Excerpt from the book and even the Full Text!
Today Bowker is happy to announce that in addition to utilizing the descriptive text of enhanced metadata we are now able to collect media links provided in a publisher’s ONIX feed. The links can feature the whole product or a variety of images, audio and video. The images can go deeper than the front cover, to include a front cover thumbnail, a photo of the author, sample content, the back cover and even promotional material. Video and Audio links can include author interviews, author reading and a plethora of other marketing material. Over time Bowker will be building these offerings into our product offerings.
It is a transformative time for the publishers of books as well as for libraries, retailers and consumers. At Bowker we can help all of them optimize the discovery of a book in any format by maximizing the enhanced metadata available in today’s ONIX feeds.
