Self-Publishing Movement Continues Strong Growth in U.S., Says Bowker

2012 ISBNs show nearly 60% more self-published works than in 2011

October 9, 2013 (New Providence, NJ)A new analysis of U.S. ISBN data by ProQuest affiliate Bowker reveals that the number of self-published titles in 2012 jumped to more than 391,000, up 59 percent over 2011 and 422 percent over 2007. Ebooks continue to gain on print, comprising 40 percent of the ISBNs that were self-published in 2012, up from just 11 percent in 2007.

Online Retailers Gained, While Brick-and-Mortar Lost In Wake of Borders Exit

Bowker study says bookstore chains held less than 20 percent share in 2012

August 6, 2013 (New Providence, NJ) – In the year following the exit of Borders from the book retail scene, online retailers -- led by Amazon -- earned 44 percent of Americans’ book dollars, up from 39 percent in 2011. The insights into where book buyers are spending come from the 2013 U.S. Book Consumer Demographics and Buying Behaviors Annual Review, the publishing industry’s only complete consumer-based report integrating channel, motivation and category analysis of U.S. book buyers. The Review, an information staple published this month by Bowker® Market Research and industry trade magazine Publishers Weekly, notes that while book retailer Barnes & Noble (including BN.com) remained the second largest bookselling outlet, it depended more on sales of print books in 2012 than it did in 2011, with consumer ebook spending there declining from six percent in 2011 to four percent.

Students increasingly look for alternatives to traditional texts; downloading of unauthorized content on the rise, says new BISG research

July 16, 2013 (New York, NY) – Student use of alternative and illicit course materials is on the rise, according to new research from the Book Industry Study Group (BISG)’s ongoing survey of Student Attitudes Toward Content in Higher Education. The second installment in Volume Three of the study, which is powered by Bowker® Market Research, shows that the percentage of students reporting they had downloaded course content from an unauthorized Web site has risen steadily to 34 percent from 20 percent when it was first measured in 2010. Over the same period, the percent of students saying they photocopied or scanned chapters of textbooks from other students rose from 21 percent to 31 percent.
