RCL: Subjects
GENERAL LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE This section contains works pertinent to the study of languages and literature in general, and includes works of literary theory and criticism which are not specific to a single national literature; works on linguistics and language (including the English language and its history and development); and works treating special topics allied to the study of literature, such as book history and translation. Given the centrality of theoretical works to the study of literature at the graduate level and to literary scholarship, this section contains more advanced works of criticism than were to be found in the various literature sections of BCL3. At the same time, it also attempts to present a balanced retrospective collection of criticism, which are important to a historical understanding of criticism although they may be rarely cited in current scholarship. Where possible, works are recommended in their newest, most reliable edition. Some works are available only as reprints, while a few are out of print, though still recommended. Return to Subject List
