Data Profiler™

Bowker® Data Profiler is a service that enhances your library’s metadata, improving search and discovery. This new service processes e-content* and extracts relevant information, creating enhanced metadata elements that can be fed back to a library’s or institution’s search engine. This process allows institutions to improve search and discovery of their unique collections and better leverage valuable staff time, equating to cost savings and a better end user experience.

*Electronic content including: ebooks, periodicals, newspapers, locally held special collections and more

This customizable tool enriches your web-scale discovery, layer by layer:

  • Extracts key terms and words
  • Extracts entities (people, places, organizations)
  • Applies more than 54 classification labels, in any appropriate combination (e.g., Political Science, History, and Biography) with additional categories created upon request
  • Provides a “summary” (i.e., a list of the most prominent sentences)
  • Finds similar works
  • Assesses the Lexile reading level
  • Uses a dictionary of more than 6.5 million terms; specialized lexicons can be added as needed

“..This process allows great precision in searches as well as the identification of relevant content that might otherwise have not surfaced.” - Sharon Lubrano

Bowker Data Profiler—a faster, more affordable solution for your institution!

Today most institutions have large bodies of unstructured e-content with little or no metadata. Metadata that does exist is often limited, inconsistent, and doesn’t lend itself to accurate search.

  • Manually tagging large repositories is extremely labor intensive, and requires extensive subject matter expertise.
  • For most organizations, a project of this scope is unfeasible.
  • Deeper, richer, layers of consistent metadata tags can improve search and discovery.
  • Data Profiler allows for faster turnaround time—in days, not months or years—allowing you to enjoy the benefits almost immediately (currently Bowker loads 30,000 documents per day, and they are usable within 4 business days).

Engage with Bowker to profile your content

  • We work with you to find best way to access your data; Bowker ingests the full-text content and extracts relevant keywords (locations, facets, subjects, reading level, summaries, etc).
  • We send it back to you tagged with keywords and entities, labeled, enhanced with readability and grade scores, in XML format—ready for your application.

By using the same industry tool publishers use to classify and add metadata to their own content, Bowker Data Profiler improves the search and discovery of e-content for libraries:

  • Librarians make their e-content more searchable to their patrons.
  • Collection development departments use the categories and summaries provided by the tool to assign subject classifications.
  • Archivists of any e-content can get a handle on their content base.

Compared to other services:

  • Zero set-up costs — we do the work for you.
  • Platform independent — enriched metadata that can easily be imported in to your library system OPAC or search engine.
  • Software as a service.

All of this, without expensive manual content tagging efforts.
