How to Get an ISBN

Who is eligible for an ISBN?
The ISBN Agency assigns ISBNs at the direct request of publishers, e-book publishers, audio cassette and video producers, software producers, and museums and associations with publishing programs.

How much does it cost to register an ISBN?
There is a Publisher Registration Fee for all ISBN applications, as follows:

How do I choose the correct quantity of ISBNs to purchase?
ISBNs are sold in blocks of 10, 100, and 1000. When purchasing ISBNs, we recommend that you estimate the amount of publications you will be publishing within the next five years, and select the block that best suits your needs. Generally, it's best to select the block that will last you for a few years, because this allows you to maintain one publisher prefix and minimize the unit cost per ISBN. When purchasing a larger block of ISBNs, the price per ISBN decreases.

What's the difference between Regular, Priority, and Express processing?
In order to give you the flexibility to decide whether cost or turnaround time is more important when ordering your ISBNs, we offer three levels of service that will determine how quickly your order is processed:

How long will it take to receive my ISBN(s)?
Processing of your order begins the moment the ISBN application and full payment are received at the agency. Online orders begin processing immediately, while those orders sent via postal mail may not begin processing for several days. Once the application and payment are received, you will receive your order in the number of business days indicated by the processing plan you've purchased.
