How to Get an ISMN

Who is eligible for an ISMN?
The ISMN Agency assigns ISMNs at the direct request of music publishers for printed music only.

How much does it cost to get an ISMN?
There is a service fee to process all ISMN applications. See the chart below. Priority processing involves and additional fee of $50.

REGULAR PROCESSING
(10 business day turnaround)
PRIORITY PROCESSING
(3 business day turnaround)
Quantity Service Fee Service Fee
10 ISMNs $200 $250
100 ISMNs $500 $550
1,000 ISMNs $800 $850
10,000 ISMNs $1,200 $1,250

Please note that all fees listed above are NON-REFUNDABLE.

How do I choose the correct quantity of ISMNs to purchase?
ISMNs are sold in blocks of 10, 100, 1000, and 10,000. When purchasing ISMNs, we recommend that you estimate the amount of music you'll be publishing over the next five years, and select the block that best suits your needs. Generally, it's best to select the block that will last you for a few years, because this allows you to maintain one publisher prefix and minimize the unit cost per ISMN. When purchasing a larger block of ISMNs, the price per ISMN decreases.

How long will it take to receive my ISMN(s)?
Allow 10 business days for non-priority processing from the time an ISMN application is received at the agency (not from the date sent by the publisher). Priority processing is 3 business days from the time an application is received at the agency.
