TLC and CARL to Provide Libraries with Expanded "Enrichment Data" from Syndetic Solutions

Inwood, WV - August 3, 2001

The Library Corporation (TLC)—a global leader in library automation and personalized Web portal services—today announced that the company has signed an agreement with Syndetic Solutions, Inc. This contract continues TLC's efforts to enhance the patron's experience in the library by providing an expanded range of "Enrichment Data" through TLC and CARL's "YouSeeMore" and Online Public Access Catalogs (OPACs).

Syndetic Solutions is a leading provider of specialized bibliographic data and enrichment content to libraries. TLC's contract with Syndetic Solutions calls for the integration of seven unique services into the OPAC and "YouSeeMore." These include:

• Fiction and Biography Data - brief descriptions of characters, subjects, settings, time periods, and sub-genre of adult novels and biographies
  
  
• Summaries and Annotations - descriptions of adult and juvenile books derived from book jackets or written by the independent reviewers of Book News, Inc.
  
  
• CHOICE Reviews - book reviews published in ALA's CHOICE Magazine
  
  
• Excerpts, first chapters, or forewords from over 10,000 current titles, with 8,000 new chapters and excerpts added annually, includes both adult and juvenile books
  
  
• Author Note - descriptions of an author's educational, professional and personal background, includes both adult and juvenile books
  
  
• Cover Images - scanned electronic copies of the front cover of recently published adult and juvenile books
  
  
• Tables of Contents - displays of adult and juvenile books when available

The enrichment content data is available immediately from TLC for its LibraryoSolution and CARLoSolution customers. Syndetics has delivered the initial compilation and will continue to supply additional content on a weekly basis. Furthermore, the delivery of content does not require any work from the library.

Commenting on today's announcement, TLC's President and CEO, Annette Bakhtiar, stated, "Our new agreement with Syndetics is an exciting development in the enrichment of library offerings. The Syndetics data will enable patrons to better identify materials that interest them, hence, enhancing their library experience."
