Endeavor, Syndetic Solutions Partner To Expand Resources: Enables ENCompass Users to Access Additional Extended Service Information

Des Plaines, IL - January 17, 2002

Endeavor Information Systems and Syndetic Solutions today announced a partnership to provide enrichment materials through the extended services of the ENCompass integrated system for managing, searching and linking the diverse collections of academic and research libraries. This information includes tables of contents, first chapters, reviews, synopses and annotations, author notes, cover art images, and excerpts as well as fiction and biography headings.

Syndetic was chosen as Endeavor's partner because of rich resources for the academic market, a proven track record and quick turnaround time -- Syndetic receives information from publishers on a set schedule and the information goes from receipt to ready for delivery in a week -- a strong benchmark among enrichment data suppliers. The Syndetic Solutions databases include over 3.5 million separate bibliographic enrichment data elements and it is growing at the rate of approximately 5,000 data elements each week or 250,000 elements each year.

"Our belief has always been that items like table of contents, summaries and author notes, plus book jackets, were nice to look at, but should be used as an access tool as our goal is to increase access to information," explained Allan Graham, Director of Marketing & Business Relations for Syndetic Solutions. "ENCompass broadcasts searches out to a number of databases in conjunction with cataloged information, providing a new opportunity to access this data within a searchable database. As the partnership develops, we'll provide open keyword access, which we feel is important to academic libraries."

"We try to, of course, work with a broad range of content providers that bring in every discipline for academic libraries," Graham continued. He explained that Syndetic Solutions works with suggestions from libraries for popular discipline-specific resources.

"This extended service empowers libraries with a whole new way to provide information to today's generation of researchers," commented Jane Burke, Endeavor's President and CEO. "Research has said the use of these resources like tables of contents, summaries, annotations or analytical notes are necessary in the information-seeking experience. This partnership is one more demonstration of how Endeavor anticipates the needs of the academic library researcher and integrates software solutions for the changing roles of libraries.
